Soul Coughing - Lust in Phaze (2002)
Remember those old Cartoon Network Groovies music videos they'd air during commercials? Ah, nostalgia. So these guys made this one, and it's been stuck in my head for the past few months. This particular album is a greatest hits collection cause I'll admit I still don't know them that well; I honestly just wanted "Circles" and "Casiotone Nation." However, after listening to this for a bit, I'd say their overall sound was if Cake decided to start hanging out at slam poetry venues while listening to Tom Waits on heavy rotation.
You know, after looking up all those links, I may have to do a Best of Cartoon Network Groovies collection next.

Various Artists' Bandcamps (2010)
So 88.9, the greatest radio station in America, put together their top Milwaukee Bandcamps of 2010. How awesome is that? Seriously, I fucking love 88.9. Anyway, instead of picking the best ones and making posts for each, I decided to give them all a quick lesson and do a little blurb on each so you can sort of pick out what you'd be most interested in. You should really check all of them out, though. It's definitely worth it, and there's enough diversity that my taste probably won't match yours. And remember, Bandcamps typically have FREE and LEGAL music, so there really isn't any reason you shouldn't just download all of this. Unless, like, you're a lazy person. In which case, get off the internet and go do some jumping jacks. No, not later, NOW! RIGHT NOW! I'm watching you.
Adoptahighway - really interesting instrumental electronic stuff
All Those Runners - probably my favorite in the group, a lot like early Murder By Death and And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead
At Latl - Modest Mouse clone
AUTOMatic - really well-done hip-hop
Blessed Feathers - Bon Iver clone
Conrad Plymouth - interesting laid-back solo acoustic stuff, sorta similar tone to Matthew Good or Gary Jules
Dana Copafeel - nice classic-sounding hip-hop
Del Harmonic - see above
Eric & Magill - fantastic experimental folk
Fahri - fun indie/alternative, dat reverb distortion
Faux Fir - The 80s called. They want their synthesizers back.
Fever Marlene - pretty basic indie rock
Frankie Flowers - If Milwaukee hip-hop has a specific sound, this guy would be a frontrunner in defining it.
Grimace - drone with a beat and some audio samples
Haz Solo x Signif - more hip-hop, I suck at describing it
Horse Force - dubstep that makes you go "What the fuck is this shit?" until you see their album cover.
Jonathan Burks - modern blues with a country twinge
KingHellBastard - more hip-hop, not as good as the others
Klassik - dem beats
Lymntylst - they remixed Phoenix's Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix album, worth a listen even if you're not that familiar with the album, "Lasso" is a pretty different unique twist on the original
Mixmasta D - What is the difference between rap and hip-hop? I guess I'm just too white to ever understand.
Nom De Rap - reminds me of a funnier version of Del for some reason
Pezzettino - This just sounds fun. I'm not really sure what you'd call it, though. Fifty internet bucks for naming that classic arcade tune at the beginning of "Lubdub." Fifty more for agreeing that "Lubdub" is fun to say.
Plight of a Parasite - hip-hop with some fucking awesome electronic elements
Que - Que? (more rap, not particularly memorable)
Testa Rosa - Remember those 80s girl pop bands? Wanna remember them again?
The Delta Routine - WHAT ELSE DO WE HAVE TO DO TO GET BIG ON THE RADIO?
The Demix - Remember that elevator sequence at the beginning of Pink Floyd's "Welcome to the Machine?" Modernize it and make it about 15 minutes longer.
The New Loud - like the old loud, only newer (pretty cool, call me crazy, but I would label this twee-hardcore, if such a thing exists)
The Vitrolum Republic - These guys are actually pretty cool. It's like they're singing old Irish folk tunes, but...they're not. Definitely worth a listen.
Tonye Dabipi - Rap that probably isn't worth your time, but what a kickass name to have! Seriously.

Shearwater - Shearwater is Enron (2010)
If you have no idea who Shearwater is, they're an awesome indie-folk-rock (but not the boring kind) band that started as a side project of some members of the band Okkervil River in 1999. They have released a few albums since then, including The Golden Archipelago earlier this year as well as Rook earlier in 2008 (both excellent albums, I strongly suggest checking them out). This latest release is a little different. Shearwater is Enron is a collection of instrumental songs recorded by the band (the songs don't even have names), including some live and/or improvised songs. If you're one of those people who can't stand Jonathan Meiburg's voice for whatever reason, this may be the album to finally get you interested in the band.
Enough chit chat. Get this album and listen to it.

Tu Fawning - Hearts On Hold (2010)
I just can't stop postin'. Okay, so, this is a new release from a side project of both Joe Haege (frontman of the amazing 31Knots) and Corrina Repp (who I'm actually not that familiar with). The end result sounds like a culmination of both of their works that ends up being kind of all over the place. Here's the single from this new album if you want to know what they sound like, since I can't come up with a good description. I guess they're like a lighter version of Menomena? I dunno.
Be sure to check out 31Knots as well after checking this out.

Iron & Wine - Walking Far From Home (2010)
I dunno how much you guys like Iron & Wine, but I have an unhealthy man-crush on Sam Beam's voice. So I'm gonna post his new single he just released on Black Friday. What appropriate artwork. I'm actually really digging the new not-so-low-quality sound he's been going for lately.
Man in Black: All right. Where is the download? The battle of wits has begun. It ends when you decide and we both click, and find out who is right... and who is dead.
Vizzini: But it's so simple! All I have to do is divine from what I know of you: are you the sort of man who would put the virus into his own computer or his enemy's? Now, a clever man would put the virus into his own computer, because he would know that only a great fool would reach for what he was given. I am not a great fool, so I can clearly not choose the (iron &) wine in front of you. But you must have known I was not a great fool, you would have counted on it, so I can clearly not choose the (iron &) wine in front of me.
Man in Black: You've made your decision then?
Vizzini: Not remotely. Because iocane (a special brand of virus) comes from Australia, as everyone knows, and Australia is entirely peopled with criminals, and criminals are used to having people not trust them, as you are not trusted by me, so I can clearly not choose the (iron &) wine in front of you.
Man in Black: Truly, you have a dizzying intellect.
Vizzini: Wait til I get going! Now, where was I?
Man in Black: Australia.
Vizzini: Yes, Australia. And you must have suspected I would have known the download's origin, so I can clearly not choose the (iron &) wine in front of me.
Man in Black: You're just stalling now.
Vizzini: You'd like to think that, wouldn't you?! You've beaten my giant, which means you're exceptionally strong, so you could've put the virus in your own computer, trusting on your strength to save you, so I can clearly not choose the (iron &) wine in front of you. But, you've also bested my Spaniard, which means you must have studied, and in studying you must have learned that man is mortal, so you would have put the virus as far from yourself as possible, so I can clearly not choose the (iron &) wine in front of me.
Man in Black: You're trying to trick me into giving away something. It won't work.
Vizzini: IT HAS WORKED! YOU'VE GIVEN EVERYTHING AWAY! I KNOW WHERE THE VIRUS IS!
Man in Black: Then make your choice.
Vizzini: I will, and I choose - What in the world can that be?
Vizzini: [Vizzini gestures up and away from the table. Roberts looks. Vizzini swaps the computers]
Man in Black: What? Where? I don't see anything.
Vizzini: Well, I- I could have sworn I saw something. No matter. First, let's click. Me from my computer, and you from yours.
Man in Black, Vizzini: [Vizzini and the Man in Black click ]
Man in Black: You guessed wrong.
Vizzini: You only think I guessed wrong! That's what's so funny! I switched computers when your back was turned! Ha ha! You fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders - The most famous of which is "never get involved in a land war in Asia" - but only slightly less well-known is this: "Never go against a Sicilian when death is on the line"! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha...
Vizzini: [Vizzini stops suddenly, his smile frozen on his face and falls to the right out of camera dead]
Buttercup: And to think, all that time it was your computer that had the virus.
Man in Black: They were both carrying the virus. I spent the last few years building up an immunity program to iocane.

Them Crooked Vultures - Self-Titled (2009)

This album isn't exactly "new", and I'm sure many of you have either heard of it or already have it. I was uploading this to send to my dad, and figured that as long as I've already done the work of uploading it I may as well share it here as well.
On to the album: John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin), Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters) and Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age) all teamed up to form the supergroup Them Crooked Vultures, and (surprise, surprise) this is their album. In case you were wondering, Grohl plays drums in this particular project.
They've only got one album released so far, and I must say I really like it. I don't feel like comparing it to anything, but if you like any of the bands that these guys are in besides this one, I feel pretty confident telling you you'll like this.
Enough rambling, on to the download!

matt pond PA - Winter Songs (2005)
This EP is pretty self-explanatory. It's short and sweet; there's some original material from the group as well as covers of Neutral Milk Hotel's "In the Aeroplane over the Sea" and Fleetwood Mac's National Lampoon's Vacation anthem "Holiday Road," with some nice instrumentals in between.
YOU GUYS! CHRISTMAS! IT'S ALMOST HERE!
One eskimO - All Balloons (2009)
You guys! It's snowing! And with only about a month left until Christmas, I figure it's time to whip out my favorite Winter albums. This first one actually has nothing to do with Winter, other than having an eskimo in their name. Specifically, just one eskimo. However, it's probably the most atmospheric pop album you'll ever hear. Every song is amazing, and each one works perfectly for staring outside and watching the snow fall. That's actually a really dumb representation of what they sound like, but trust me. They're really good, and I can guarantee you'll like them. Plus, they have a cartoon series that's supposed to tie in to each song by telling a long story about their eskimo mascot, but I know next to nothing about that. Oh, and the guitarist is Heath Ledger in disguise. He didn't actually die. He just wanted to change careers.
But don't take my word for it! ...Oh god, I'm turning into that guy from Reading Rainbow.

Sharon Van Etten - Epic (2010)
She opened for Junip tonight. Apparently this was her sixth time in front of a big audience, so her stage banter was kind of awkward. That's part of what made her so awesome. My new Flatbear? We shall see...
As great as she was, Epic is still a terrible name for an album.
Little People - Mickey Mouse Operation (2006)
Just a little something that has that kind of a Wx Tailor sound, with a little Portishead trip-hop in there. Its mostly instrumental deals- kind of a record of really interesting beats and loops- but its nice to get a break from the sampled sounds of voices that don't quite fit together perfectly. I'd recommend this record to my dad. That's a good thing. Really.

Inspired Flight - We All Want to Fly + Wonderwall Remix (2010)
So Inspired Flight is amazing, and I really should promote them more. They are honestly one of the best electronic groups to come out in ages, mixing soothing guitars riffs with electronic elements as well as throwing in some rap for added effect from guest artists like Scarab from Living Legends and Inspectah Deck from the Wu-Tang Clan. I guess it's similar in that way to Gorillaz, but I don't want to typecast them like that since these guys are beyond being a rip-off, having established their own definitive sound.
Anyway, today they released a remix of Oasis' "Wonderwall" that features music from The Postal Service and Radiohead among others. I personally don't like Oasis at all, and "Wonderwall" is probably my least favorite song by them, but I seriously can't get enough of this remix. Seriously, it's amazing. So here's their debut album they released just this year as well as today's brand-spankin'-new "Wonderwall" remix.

Jentri Colello - Bird of Prey (2008)
This is actually an earlier release from the group Flatbear that I posted earlier. They recorded this a year before Flying Days under the name of the singer, back when the rest of the group was just her backup band. That Flatbear album has grown to become my favorite album of '09, so I finally gave up my quest of finding this EP online and bought it through iTunes. It was worth it. If you even remotely liked Flying Days, you will like Bird of Prey. If you like Land of Talk (as I know nearly all of the posters on here do now), you will like Bird of Prey.
Guaranteed or your money back.

Various Artists - Numbers (2010)
I made a playlist of songs involving numbers. After hearing The Slip's "Seventy-Four" followed immediately by The Beatles' "When I'm Sixty-Four" on shuffle, I knew this was no coincidence. Someone or something was trying to tell me something. I interpreted it to be a playlist about numbers. The meaning behind it may never be known, but hey, numbers!
Can ya dig it?

A Troop of Echoes - Days in Automation (2010)
With only one album release to their name, this Providence, Rhode Island post-rock group manages to set themselves apart from the crowd with the inclusion of some jazzy saxophone. And let me tell you, it works. So much so that I went ahead and bought their album off their Bandcamp page just so I could share it with you guys. Unfortunately, the whole thing in FLAC was too big for Mediafire which means you're stuck with it in 320 kpbs. So nyeh.

MUTEMATH - Armistice Live (2010)
Okay, so I know Mute Math aren't exactly indie/unknown. So don't go yelling at me for posting a band that you've all heard of. I just figured I'd share the wonderful live album that they just released today for everyone to enjoy. If you haven't heard of Mute Math, well, download this and see for yourself. They're one of my favorite modern bands, so if that means anything to you, just download this. And yeah, I know we've had four bands in the past three days. If that's a problem, you're at the wrong site.
HERE. You're welcome.

Grouper - Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill (2008)
Grouper is ambient/noise project of Portland native Liz Harris. And this is my favorite record in general. I couldn't be happier to be giving it to you right now in the thick of my favorite season. It's a good winter album too. I showed it to one of my old boyfriends from high school the other day and he said it was cheesy. IT IS NOT CHEESY. It's really layered and deep, and it might not hit you the first listen. But lemme tell you, one of these days you're going to be trudging through Midwest snow and wish you were listening to Heavy Water/I'd Rather Be Sleeping (track 2) on repeat. It's also perfect sleepy or study music. It's just pretty, meditative, drone-y, dreamy, reverb-drenched sweet singing layered over minimalist strummed guitar and Wurlitzer keyboard. Try it out.Marnie Stern - Self-Titled (2010)
Hi, my name is Jana. Peter invited me. I'm not way eloquent, but I get music. You can find me on tumblr, last.fm, and twitter if you want (I love the net.) Glad to be your 'token girl'.

For my first post, I am treating you with Marnie Stern's self-titled, just released this last week. It's exploding my brain. Stern, known for her supaa technical guitar shredding, gets vulnerable. It's a genre all its own too-- experimental, math rock, girl garage, noisy dance pop music. Also, her drummer Zach Hill tears it up. Recommended tracks are the opener For Ash, apparently about the death of an ex (shit gets heavy), and my personal favorite Transparency is the New Mystery.

Daniel Land & the Modern Painters - Love Songs For The Chemical Generation (2009)
Last year's "Love Songs For The Chemical Generation" took a couple spins to sink in, but I now consider it to be among my favorite shoegaze albums of all time, right next to Nowhere, Souvlaki, and of course, Loveless. This is a criminally overlooked album with very little acclaim or publicity, which I find baffling because it completely floors me, especially on tracks like "Off Your Face Again" and the sublime "Run Silent, Run Deep". I even went all over the hottest record stores in London searching for it, from Rough Trade to Sister Ray to the HMV that claims to be the world's largest, and not a single employee had even heard of it. The album isn't available in the states, and the band has never done a show here either. But this is the music delivery service, so that is hardly an obstacle for us.
Holla back.
Mice Parade - What It Means To Be Left-Handed (2010)
Mice Parade released a new album last week. If you haven't yet, check out his previous self-titled album. It is fantastic. That said, from what I've heard of this one, I think I'm going to love it just as much. It's pretty basic indie rock with a slight tropical island feel (somewhere between Aloha and Plants & Animals), but it still manages to somehow be catchy as all hell.

The Titan Courageous - Miscellaneous Discography (2009)
I totally forgot about these guys until today. I played them on my radio show last year, of which probably only two people listened to at most, so I figured I'd throw them on here to give them a little more attention. Hearing them today brought back memories of trudging through the snow across the bridge over the river of the barren wastelands of Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
Hailing all the way from Denver, The Titan Courageous are a (now on hiatus) progressive rock group that fit somewhere between Coheed & Cambria and The Mars Volta. They released all of their songs for free one at a time, with big gaps in between each release. There are only five total tracks, but these are five of the most well-crafted songs put to...internet. I like the fact that they only made a couple tracks in their whole time span, though. It seems better to have a handful of topnotch songs over one record with a bunch of filler.
But I've already said too much. I went ahead and put all their songs into one .rar file just for you, so here you go.

Archive - Take My Head (1999)
While meandering through the interwebs, I happened upon a video. While this video proved to be pretty damn cool, I found the background song to be just as awesome. So after a little browsing, I found out it was the opening track to Archive's Take My Head. It's some reasonable trip-hop, and I think it's worthy of posting on here to change things up a bit from all the indie rock that's been getting posted lately.
Trip it out.

Total Babe - Heatwave EP (2009)
Total Babe were the second of two openers for Jeremy Messersmith when he played in Minneapolis on the 18th. When they first started, I was doubting their talent, but after a couple songs I was liking them just fine. They're a talented group of young kids playing catchy songs. As for their style/genre, others giving them praise have dubbed them indie-pop, which seems pretty accurate.
For 5 bucks, I figured I'd grab the EP and see how it was. I like it better than I liked them live, but that's not to say they were bad live. The main difference is that now you can understand the vocalist, and she's actually pretty good.
Well anyway, check it out. It's worth your time.

Jean Baudin - Solace (2008)
I literally just heard about this guy today. This man is amazing. Why? He made an album composed entirely of him playing an 11-string bass. Not only that, but he made it sound good! It's full of ambient tracks that I can't even begin to comprehend how to play. Just do yourself a favor and listen to this craziness.

Broken Social Scene - Lo-Fi For The Dividing Nights (2010)
Broken Social Scene is a damn fine indie rock super-group. They released a new album this past year, and it was...alright. They also just released a new EP that I guess is supposed to be a tag-along to this new album. It's actually pretty different, despite having been recorded at the same time. Most of the songs I've heard so far are actually instrumental. I just started listening to it, though, so I'm not even sure if there's a drastic change halfway through that I'm totally clueless about. But I'm really digging it so i figured you guys would wanna have a listen too.
Try it out.

Fiona Apple - Tidal (1996)
Fiona Apple's Tidal, a 1996 release. Along with Alanis Morisette, t.A.T.u, and Emiliana Torrini, this was the soundtrack of my dad's car. And that is a cool car.
Try before you buy. Twitch before you bitch. Apply before you die. Convey before you play. Get... diagnosed before you post.

Junip - Fields (2010)
Junip is the side project of my favorite folk artist Jose Gonzalez, consisting of some of his other friends rather than just him on guitar. While Junip is a bit of a departure from his typical lo-fi acoustic endeavors, the group still has a soothing folk feel that's just as good as anything Gonzalez has released previously. This past year, the band released an EP and now have finally released their first full length album. From what I've heard so far, I'm impressed. The song "Rope & Summit" makes this whole album worth checking out.
So check it out.
So check it out.

Flatbear - Flying Days (2009)
This is another band I caught by chance alone at Summerfest this year. They actually remind me greatly of Land of Talk, and that's all I really have to say other than this album is pretty great.
This means you should try it simply because I told you to.

Land of Talk - Cloak and Cipher (2010)
That's right, TWO albums today. This one comes from my favorite female singer Elizabeth Powell's band Land of Talk. I had initially heard about these guys when I found out the drummer for The Slip (one of the greatest bands OF ALL TIME), Andrew Barr, has been a member since their last album. This is now Land of Talk's second full length record, and I've heard good things. Some Are Lakes, their debut album, is definitely worth checking out as well.
If I had to pick a sound, I'd saaaaaay...I dunno. Female vocalist. Nirvana-esque guitar riffs (at least on the first album, haven't heard a thing from this one yet despite it's decent reviews). Good enough for ya? They're a good band, what else can I say?
So why not give 'em a try?

Elsinore - Yes Yes Yes (2010)
During this past summer at the aptly named Summerfest, I saw this random band Elsinore open for Collections of Colonies of Bees. They were...alright. I guess. Anyway, I got a copy of their EP The General and the song of the same name which just happens to appear on it is actually quite good (as opposed to just "regular good"). In fact, it's probably been my favorite song of the week.
Well, by some freakishly awesome chance, I happened to hear that their first full length album was released today of all days. I listened to it once and thought it was pretty good. It's got a couple tracks from the EP, including "The General" so be especially sure to check that one out. If anything, it kinda reminds me of some kind of local band trying to sound like Death Cab for Cutie. It's quite poppy and probably forgettable but worth checking out at least once, if only for a couple standout tracks.
Try it once. Try it twice. SOLD!

Men Working In Trees - Let's Be Happy (2010)
The lead singer for this band posted about said band on Something Awful cause he wanted people to check out their new (at the time) album for free. I thought it was catchy as fuck, so he sent me the first song on this new EP a while back. Well, now this thing is finally out, and I think the other song is pretty good too. But "Monday" is still their best song.
So.

Opgave - Writing the Silver (2006)
I came across this fucking sick record on youtube in the related of some trip-hop artist. I think it was Apparat. Which is also really good. But this. THIS. no. yes.
no.
This isnt good. This is amazing. Its like... take the trip hop beats and stuff that portishead did so well back in the day, and add in wax tailor's genius of using hooks and sampling.
Pretty much is like if wax tailor... well... just fucking play it. You wont be disappointed.
Some tracks have a definite feel to them that is different from the others- for example, Hiroshima has the right instruments to have an almost 'arabic' feel in the beginning with more electronic drums and heavy bass adding in later. The opening track is much less 'electronic' in sound, almost vintage. Its also my favorite track. So, if you dont like one track, keep playing it because they are different enough that there might be one that is really good later on. The last track is pretty badass, too, i might add.
I've taken the liberty of uploading it because the link it got it from was some russian filez site that was totally sketchy and had like a million redirects. I went through the pain of first, fucking finding this, and second, dealing with the bullshit to download it.
Try it, you ungrateful fatasses.

White Hinterland - Kairos (2010)

Tryyyyyyy it.

William "Billy" Lavender - Memphis Livin (2009)
So, as some of you may know, I was recently in Memphis, Tennessee. With the addition of being famously racist, there is a street- Beale Street- that is like taking a little cut of Summerfest, really, and dropping it into the middle of downtown Memphis, complete with booze being sold every 25 feet. It is here that there are a mess of blues bars with neon signs and everything, cafés, and other shit, including the gimmick-y 'B.B.King's Blues Bar'. Oh, and there were a bunch of motorcycles parked.
While here, I was at this blues joint and watched these dudes play... the blues. (what a surprise.) Okay, fucking seriously, it was fucking amazing. Just.... damn. Crazy shit went down. They did this jam shit on every song, and it was an amazing show. Anyway, I bought their CD after they finished playing.
I was told by the rhythm guitar that it was recorded in his barn. Fuck yeah.
There is a different 'guest' singer on each track usually, but I'd recommend starting with the track '3AM' because not only was that one was one of the best live, but it's also got everyone that was playing that night on it. The lead singer was this awesome chain-smoking black dude that plays amazing harmonica.
Try it out, bitches.

The White Stripes - Conquest single (2007)
Here's another package from the Music Delivery Service. I know I just sent the other one, but this one is technically a delayed arrival. See, I got (snatched) this CD single from the radio booth back on campus for what I assumed was just The White Stripes' "Conquest." Turns out when I finally got around to ripping it today that it was two alternate versions of the song, one being a slightly altered version in Spanish and the other an acoustic version. It's pretty damn cool, so I figured you guys would want it. Enjoy.
Make with the trying of the music.

The Books - The Way Out (2010)
You people like music? I like music. So here's a package from my new music delivery service.
I gotta package here for some Books. What the hell do you want with Books? I thought we only delivered music.
The Books never cease to amaze me. Every album they release blows me away with how so seemingly easy they make it look to find random unknown samples and turn them into ridiculously catchy and amazing songs. I have seriously never heard a band quite like this one, and this album sits equally beside the rest of their releases for me.
Try it out.
